Héctor Vargas
the back streets of Valparaiso, Chile
Héctor Vargas, a 58-year-old wildfire lookout, lives on the worn edges of Valparaíso. From his high perch on the cerro, he vigilantly scans the horizon for smoke, lugging the weight of guilt from a fire he couldn't quell years ago. His days melt between the salty winds, metallic hose water, and the tactile art he creates without glue, balancing every component like the difficult balance of his life.
