Mahad Ali
a fishing port on the Gulf of Aden, Djibouti
Mahad Ali, a twenty-year-old mail carrier, has worked the dusty rural routes of Djibouti since he was a teenager. Each dawn, he ventures out on his battered motorbike, carefully navigating between fishing boats and grazing goats, ensuring reliable delivery of crucial remittances and official papers. He refuses to be photographed, shunning phones and IDs, feeling more at home with the natural markers of his environment — especially the colors of smoke rising from the scattered hearths and boat-stoves of his community.
