Rói Joensen
a wind-scoured village on the Faroe Islands
Rói Joensen spends his days in the toll booth on the main road out of Skarvanes, his small windbuffeted village on the Faroe Islands. Unable to read, he relies on his acute memory, recognizing the voices and registration numbers of the same callers passing every day. His meticulous oral logs are filled with details like the taste of hose water and ferry schedules, as he worries about misremembering crucial information that could impact his villagers' lives and silently dreams of breaking out of the confines of his illiteracy.
